Ep. 70 – What Does Romans 13 Mean? (Tulips & Honey)

Posted · 4 Comments

Strap in; we’re talking about religion and politics today!  Our friend, Lauren, from the Tulips & Honey Podcast interviews Patrick on how Christians should respond to government in light of Scripture.  The launchpad for this is Romans 13.  From there, they discuss what does Romans 13 actually mean; what should the Christian’s response to the State and its overreach be; how should a Christian view the use of force against people and against government; and can one be a Christian and an anarchist?

    Fantastic episode Patrick.

    • Patrick says:

Thank you. Appreciate the kind words and glad you enjoyed!

      • Duncan says:

I’ve been thinking about the link between anarchy and presuppositional apologetics lately. I find it curious that there a many parallels between the state and God’s Kingdom. They seem to be in competition with each other. E.g.
Constitution vs Scripture (claiming the highest laws, morals, values)
        National anthem vs praise/worship music
        Public schools vs Biblical parenting
        Taxes/wealth redistribution vs voluntary generosity
State press speech vs church sermon (competition seems particular evident during COVID-19 pandemic with leaders giving motivational speeches, “we need to work together” etc.)

        • Patrick says:

Those are really excellent examples. There have been a few libertarian commentators who have been showing how the State mimics religious operating parallels. When the West became a “post-Christian nation” the State supplanted God as an idol (Romans 1) and from there you have the priests (politicians), the holy text (laws and societal rules), mantra prayers (the pledge of allegiance) and even heresy (wrong thinking like not embracing medical castration of children).

I’d also recommend the following podcast episode talking about how the development of the State is an early sin rebellion –

Always open for more discussion on this. I will also say that our next 3 episodes (Ep. 71 through 73) will be dealing with how different worldviews also have religious parallels due to their idol nature. So enjoy those.
